Interestingly enough, it seems my site is high up on the Google ranking for several search terms, and for those words people use to get to my site I often tend to appear in the top 10. The dark cloud inside this silver lining is that the site keeps getting hit by comment spammers and, even after MovableType implemented the comment throttle algorithms, I get over 10 spam comments on any single post per day.
Fear not, I told myself, MovableType 3 is coming. Its authentication scheme where only registered users can post comments will take care of this.
Unfortunately the free version of MovableType 3 will have limited functionality, and the commercial license brings with it a new pricing scheme that I just can’t justify. This is a personal blog, not a revenue-generating site.
I’d stick with version 2.66.1 but all the comment spam is getting extremely annoying, so I’ll be moving to a new thing that simplifies controlling spam. I’ve been reading raves about WordPress, which does have comment moderation, and also some very nice things about Pivot, which I haven’t looked closely at. I’m not too picky on the tool, my main requirements being:
- Able to import from MovableType
- GPL’d, preferably in a language I dig like PHP or Python
- Some sort of comment control, such as requiring user authentication or comment moderation
- Decent skins - my graphic design skills aren’t up to par
For the time being I may just upgrade to MT3, but I want a more permanent solution for the future. Pointers are welcome.
