Open Source Mac Software

Posted on Friday 22 December 2006

You don’t think I went all Microsoft Office just because I moved to Mac, do you? No siree. Thanks to my friend Fabricio I found a great page on Open Source Mac software, software that not only is freely available but for which the code is available for improvements by other developers. Of the list on that site I’m currently using:

  • NeoOffice, a great-looking port of OpenOffice which feels right at home in the Mac desktop.
  • Smultron, a text editor written for programmers
  • Thunderbird, which I prefer over Apple’s Mail client because of its easy integration with pgp, and the fact that I’ll be able to take my mailboxes to any other platform.
  • Adium, a great little IM client with support for OTR message encryption
  • Burn, for… well, guess.
  • Camino, a Mac-specific port of the Firefox browser
  • And Seashore, an image editor based on The Gimp (which I’ve praised before).

I hope you find them as useful as I have.
