New stem cell source discovered

Posted on Monday 8 January 2007

Researchers in Harvard University believe they’ve found a new source for stem cells - the amniotic fluid.

The Harvard scientists say the stem cells they found in amniotic fluid seem to have many of the qualities of embryonic stem cells.

The scientists, from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, were writing in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

They say they have managed to turn the stem cells into functioning muscle, fat, blood vessel, nerve and liver cells.

In tests, these newly made cells seemed to restore some function in brain-damaged mice.

Why, with noxious effects like those, it’s clear why the Bush administration is so sternly opposed to stem cell research! Not only the nice folks from Harvard have managed to find a source of stem cells, but they’ve removed the think of the children! excuse that the administration has been giving for stopping scientific progress.
