Items of use to terrorists

Posted on Friday 23 September 2005

I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but what the fuck?

LONDON, England (AP) — A British Muslim convert who was arrested near the Channel Tunnel has been jailed for two counts of possessing items of use to terrorists.

Andrew Rowe, 34, was convicted of having a notebook containing details on how to fire mortar bombs, and a code for terrorism.

Rowe was jailed for seven-and-a-half years on the two charges, making a total of 15 years.

    […]

The jury deadlocked on a third count which accused Rowe of having a pair of socks, adapted with a cord, for terrorist purposes.

Notice that he was guilty of possessing items of use to terrorists. Let’s see… I’m your standard average software developer. I own:

  • Photographic cameras
  • A cellular phone
  • E-mail accounts
  • Bank accounts

and worst of all

  • Encryption software and
  • Socks, to which a cord may easily be added

I’m sure a terrorist could put all of those to some nasty use. Hell, I regularly buy orange juice and own two cats, who use cat litter. As we all learned on Fight Club (might not even be true) cat litter and orange juice can be used for napalm.

If I ever get caught with one foot in England, I’m royally fucked.

Well, CNN has removed the news item, but thanks to Google we can still find several other references:
